How do quadcopters turn?
One way to figure out how to make a quadcopter turn is to imagine it like a steering wheel. You want your drone’s rotational force—both its yaw and roll—to be in a balanced state of equilibrium. By tilting one motor clockwise and one counterclockwise, your copter will begin spinning around its central axis, just like turning a steering wheel from left to right turns your car in that direction.
How do drones turn left and right?
When a drone rotates or turns, it’s usually because of three things: thrust, lift and weight. Thrust is created by drone propellers and allows it to move forward or backward; lift comes from air flowing over those same propellers and allows a drone to climb; and weight is related to the mass of all components in a drone minus its fuel.
How does the drone reverse?
The most common way a drone turns is by yaw. When yawing, two different actions take place. The tail rotates left or right, creating lift on one side of your quadcopter and producing drag on the other side. Since you’re balancing from side to side and not front to back, it makes sense that your entire drone will start turning in one direction. In order to maintain altitude and stability, you’ll want to adjust your throttle slightly in the opposite direction of turn so that your drone will lean into its new orientation.
Do hexacopters turn more than quads?
Yes, hexacopters turn much faster than quadcopters. This is due to their ability to steer six motors at once, as opposed to only four on a quadcopter. (Four motors also need twice as many wires.) For example, a typical 6-motor octocopter is able to rotate 180 degrees in about 1 second compared with 3 seconds for a quadcopter.
