7 Best follow me drones in 2022

Drone companies have been incorporating new features into their consumer drones to ease the time spent flying them. One of the first smart features included was Follow Me Mode, which allows pilots to set a general course for where they want their drone to go, and then it flies there automatically. With everything on the market today, it can be difficult to figure out what’s good or bad; so today we’ll focus on Follow Me Mode and tell you about our favorite products that include this feature!

As the name suggests, best follow me drones is a smart flight feature that allows it to follow you. Various different methods are used, such as object detection, controller following and GPS/GLONASS following. All of these modes have their own setups using ultrasonic sensors, GPS/GLONASS and Bluetooth connectivity. The ultimate goal is getting the best shot possible for the user.

There’s a considerable difference in performance and features between these lower quality drones and the more advanced ones. Of course, it would all depend on what you’re looking for – some people would prefer an easier-to-operate machine without too much heavy lifting for them (that being said, there are still plenty of options for those who are able to do so), but others might want an advanced machine with several unique features that simply make things easier.

This list is in no particular order, please take your time to go over each one and find the drone that best suits you. However, if we had to choose the absolute favorite among them all, it would be the Skydio 2; as its near-perfect ability sets it apart from every other available option on this website.

Weight: 1.7 lb
Rotors: 4
Obstacle Detection: Yes
Integrated Camera: Integrated with Gimbal
Video Resolution: 4K

The Skydio 2 is one of the best drones in the world, capable of recognizing and understanding its surroundings. The processing units that are commonly seen in higher end commercial drones can also be found in the education space; which helps power it’s powerful object detection software. You’ll never need to worry about crashing this drone because when you do go out of sight for a few moments, it’ll automatically find you again – adjusting your course accordingly.

As much as we enjoy the Skydio 2 for its follow-me capabilities, sometimes we feel like this is all it can do. While the camera quality isn’t bad, it just doesn’t compare to other drones that are similarly priced. You can fly this drone using remote control, but the true value comes from when you’re flying autonomously – if you’re not going to use these features then maybe this drone isn’t worth your hard earned money.

Pros
  • Portable form factor
  • Amazing obstacle avoidance
  • Automatic video recording
  • Works with Android and iOS
  • USB-C charging port
Cons
  • Disappointing camera
  • Short battery life
  • Only works in daylight
  • Remote and GPS Beacon add to cost

Skydio R1

Specification

Weight: 2.2 lbs
Battery: 2x — 16 minutes each
Top Speed: 25 mph
Ceiling: 65 feet
Communication: GPS, Wifi

Introducing the NVIDIA Jetson Super Computer to the consumer market, the Skydio R1 helped pave the way for a new generation of drones. The computer system was mainly built for unmanned systems and focused on navigating tasks – like most Jetson powered robotic devices. While there were some setbacks such as an expensive price tag, mediocre camera quality, and long charging times; these were all lessons learned from this first drone which led to what we now know as the Skydio 2.

Honestly, no, if you are not finding the Skydio R1 on sale, or do not have an essential need of its hardware for other projects – there is little point in purchasing it over the newer and more capable Sydney 2.

Pros
  • Cool self-flying technology
  • 4K video capture
  • Automatic recording
  • 64GB internal memory
  • Works with Android, iOS, and watchOS
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Bulky
  • Doesn’t work with physical remote

DJI Air 2S

Specification
Weight: 21oz / 595g
Battery: 3500 mAh LiPo 3S / up to 31 minutes
Charger type: AC Mains / 100-240V, 50/60 Hz, 1.3 A
Modes: Sport, Positioning, Cine

Video resolution: 5.4K, 4K, 2.7K, 1080p (FHD)

The DJI Air 2S is lacking in some of the newer automated obstacle avoidance sensors that are present in other models, but it makes up for this with highly accurate placement of the forward sensors. The new quadcopter has four sets of semi-forward facing sensors which point at what you’re looking at when the drone tilts to one side or another to fly forwards – giving pilots an additional sense and degree of control over their drones. A brand new version of APAS (DJI’s automatic pathing system) is available here too – making flying easier than ever before.

One of our favorite drones on the market is the DJI Air 2S. It’s also our top recommendation to people who are looking for a fun hobby drone. Although it doesn’t have some features that professional quadcopters offer, such as the most advanced obstacle avoidance or follow-me functionality, it does have plenty of other useful features that are very much worth taking into account when considering whether or not to purchase this device.

Pros
  • Superb camera
  • Great flight range
  • Good battery life
  • Easy to fly
  • APAS 4.0
Cons
  • Lacks sideways facing sensors

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom

Specification
Dimensions: 3.3 by 3.6 by 8.4 inches
Weight: 2 lb
Rotors: 4
Obstacle Detection: Yes
Integrated Camera: Integrated with Gimbal
Video Resolution: 4K

The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, in my opinion, provides the best obstacle avoidance sensor configuration available among consumer drones. With an all-around sensing system at its disposal when in the proper mode, the Mavic 2 series will ensure your safety even if it is sitting far away from where you are on your journey through life. Furthermore, unlike other cameras out there (sadly), this one has a solid zooming lens that won’t allow you to feel like someone always watching over your shoulder so – give yourself some space to be free!

The Mavic 2 Zoom is one of the best affordable consumer drones on the market, we use ours often and especially when we’re looking for added distance. That said, it’s an older model now; we wouldn’t feel confident buying it at full price anymore.

Pros
  • Very safe
  • Zooming camera
  • Great flight time
  • Easy to fly
Cons
  • Older drone

DJI Mini 2

Specification
Flight time: 31 minutes
Drone size: 131x81x58 mm
Camera Sensor: 1/2.3-inch CMOS, 12MP
Max. Video Resolution: 4K/30p @ 100 Mbps
Zoom Capabilities: 2X @ 4K, 2X @ 2.7K, 4X @ 1080p
Transmission: OcuSync 2.0

The DJI Mini 2 lands at the forefront of many best-of lists for being a small and lightweight drone that is still budget-friendly. It’s our pick for the best 4K camera drone under $500; people looking to follow objects won’t find it suitable, however – it lacks obstacle avoidance features when moving forward or downward. Its portability makes up for this though; even those who subscribe to the idea that the perfect camera is always the one you have know how difficult it can be to carry around heavy equipment all day.

Let’s be fair- the Mini 2 doesn’t have an exceptional camera, even though it does produce quality images. We like how it takes pictures and videos, but we know that there are better drones out there like the Air 2S or Mavic 2 Pro which produce much better imagery. However, because of its size, we’ll always take a mini drone when we’re heading off on an adventure-even if there are other options available.

Pros
  • Very portable
  • Affordable
  • Good 4K camera
  • Best drone under $500
Cons
  • Limited obstacle avoidance sensors

Swellpro Spry+

Specification
Flight time: 17 minutes
Video Transmitter: 5.8G 8CH
Operating Temperature: : -10º to 40º Cº
Follow me Mode: Yes
Weight: 584g (18.9 oz)
Dimensions: 23 x 25 x 9 cm

If you love flying near water but are looking for ways to reduce your risk of losing something, then the Swellpro Spry+ might just be what you need. One of the best things about this powerful 4K camera drone is that it can handle most obstacles (but not all) while being totally waterproof and resilient thanks to its design.

If you want to fly over water, there is no better option than the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum. However, if you are on dry land or will be away from water anytime soon then there are some other qualities about the DJI Spark Pro that make it a good alternative.

Pros
  • Waterproof drone
  • Can fly as far as 800m (1600ft)
  • Good for beginners and experienced users
  • Comes with a 4K camera
  • Great flying speed
Cons
  • Camera doesn’t come with a gimbal
  • Doesn’t come with sensors

DJI Mavic Air 2

Specification
Size (folded): 7.1 x 3.8 x 3.3 inches
Size (unfolded): 9.96 x 7.2 x 3 inches
Weight: 570 grams (1.25 pounds)
Max video resolution: 4K/60 fps
Photo sensor: 1/2 inch, 12MP
Flight time: 34 minutes

The DJI Mavic Air 2 is a wonderful little camera drone. It houses the same camera sensor as many high-end smartphones of both generations, which includes 4K videos and up to 48MP photos. It also accomplished a new record for battery life in a Mavic drone, and proved very portable and light weight making it easy to fly without much training or experience required. Even though it was released during an earlier generation of drones – the Mavic Air 2 sits comfortably between the Mini 2 and Air 2S while being available now.

As an older drone, it’s getting harder to recommend the Mavic Air 2. It’s still a great drone, well worth its price, but we can’t ignore that the Mini 2 is more affordable and portable, and the Air 2S has a far superior camera for a reasonably small price bump. There are also other drones on the market currently that may be of interest to anyone looking at this one due either to lower cost or other features. However, any pilot will be satisfied with this one knowing they are buying one of the best ones on the market today – just know there are others out there you might want or need too!

Pros
  • Fast, nimble flier
  • Great battery life
  • Comfortable controller
  • Excellent photos and video
Cons
  • Drab design compared to previous model
